The
Significance of Peace Mission 2005 - by Erich
Marquardt & Adam Wolfe
Abstract
: Since August 18, China and Russia have been engaged in bilateral war
games, scheduled to continue through August 25. The games -- dubbed Peace
Mission 2005 -- will mark the first bilateral war games between Russia and
China, consisting of land, sea and air exercises. While the two countries
have been involved in joint war games before, they have included the
Central Asian states.
It will be important to note whether Peace Mission 2005 is the start of
more intense cooperation between Russia and China on military and
political matters. With the solidifying of their relationship in the
S.C.O., and their joint statements on U.S. influence in the region, these
two countries could be on their way toward becoming a more united power
bloc in Asia, a development that would significantly alter the balance of
power in the region.
